SUPPORT Text: Sam Oni was a student at a Baptist mission school in Ghana who accepted the opportunity, in 1963, to study at a university in America. TheUniversity was in Georgia, One of the southern states, where racism was rife and the civil rights movement was at that very time struggling to end segregation. Here is his story. Late in 1943, I became the first black student ever to enroll at Mercer Universityin Macon, Georgia. My application had, in fact, caused long and bitter controversy and it was over a year before I was admitted to that university’. My baptism of firecame soon enough. At the canteen, I would collect my food on a tray and sit down at a table with my fellow students.
